I simply nod. I understand what he means. He knows The Company could be watching or listening. We have to be very careful what we say unless we all want to die.

I wasn’t expecting Nathan to be home, but he is, propped up on the couch going through his paperwork. He sees the three of us walk in and hops off the couch, sending his work flying all over the floor.

“It’s okay, Nathan. He’s here to talk to us and give us information that we need,” I explain. I know he’s worried about having someone from The Company in his house, considering he had a near-death experience with one of them already. “It’s okay,” I reassure him again.

Nathan doesn’t speak. He gathers up his papers from the hardwood floor, and then takes a seat back on the couch. I plop down beside him. Chase and Amanda make themselves comfortable in the loveseat across from us.

“Start talking. Why is The Company trying to kill us?” Nathan spits out. He sits up straight, looking like the detective that he is.

“I don’t know why they’re trying to kill either of you.” Nathan shakes his head, as though not believing the words that come from Chase’s mouth, so Chase immediately gets defensive. “That is the truth. I do know they assassinated Derrick and Jake. Well, I don’t have any proof, but I just have a feeling because they were trying to expose their screwed up corporation.”

“And you know this how?” Nathan’s eyes never leave Chase’s.

“Because I was trying to help them uncover The Company.”

“Why were you all trying to unmask them if you knew in the first place what they were all about when you signed up for this shit?”

“No,” Chase blurts out. “I thought we were getting rid of criminals, people who were compromising the safety of this country. That’s how they made it seem, anyway.”

“And you were wrong why?”

Chase takes a deep breath and looks around, as if searching for any faces from The Company. “They kill anyone for a good price. People who are truly good beings, ones who actually are doing good for this country, citizens who just might have said the wrong words or been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most of these good people have family, kids, and The Company orders hits on them for stupid and unnecessary reasons.”

“And you wanted out, too?”

Chase nods wildly. “Yes. The only reason I signed up for this shit was because I needed the money to support my family. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into until it was too late.”

I interrupt the silence between everyone. “We need your help. Martin said something about a flash drive.”

Chase looks at me like I’ve just told him he is going to die tomorrow. “Kenn, I’m sorry, but I can’t assist you. These people are dangerous. I don’t want to get on their bad side. Look what they did to Derrick and Jake. I can’t get involved in that again.
